What the AI world thinks about OpenAI's math results

Updated 2026-10-11 · 11 voices

On Oct 6 OpenAI dropped a pile of new math results from an internal model. Suddenly everyone on X was a number theorist. Here is what the roster said, unedited.

OpenAI @OpenAI

We’re releasing a broad range of new mathematical results produced by an internal frontier model. We’ve been consulting with the independent Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence at the Institute for Advanced Study, and we have drawn on their advice and [excerpt: post continues on X]

Time for every AI account to pretend they deeply understand number theory again to opine on the importance of the latest math breakthroughs.

Some early first-hand accounts of encountering a narrow superhuman intelligence as mathematicians grapple with the hundreds of big AI proofs released by OpenAI. Problems solved in inhuman ways that make us wonder what it means to actually know things... https://t.co/DgpHqbYKCR https://t.co/saiSe2pl3f

The real news here isn’t the result; it’s what we were not told. 1. AI once tried to be a science. Now we get stuff like the completely vague report from OpenAI below, and a lot of ignorant questions from people who don’t know how to think critically. “Same procedure”? “using https://t.co/N6aYs85o1s [excerpt: post continues on X]

Rephrased: does G "emerge" from math + code RLVR? Or do you only get higher math + code skill and nothing else? Maybe G is a skill and it is isomorphic to math + code problem solving?

Interesting to see, given the controversy over the OpenAI release of a series of proofs and what it means for the discipline of mathematics, that at least some of the OpenAI proofs seem to have kicked off extremely rapid iterative advances from a wide community of collaborators. https://t.co/Lf4JLicOAX

Its reasonable for mathematicians to point out that proofs are not always the same thing as advancing mathematics. But it suggests a need for new goals for what math is trying to do Same thing will happen everywhere. 100x more PowerPoint or code is not always progress - what is?

@davidbessis Regarding #4: Many of the OpenAI researchers behind these results are math PhDs or former math professors. If anything, they care too much about the future of mathematics. AI is disruptive but we also think it will be an invaluable tool for the future of mathematics.

Dusting off this tweet from April because this gap in shared understanding of LLM capability is *widening*. It's now less "two groups of people speaking past each other" and more a sharp funnel. - Napkin math somewhere around 6B people (~75% of the population) have barely come https://t.co/79xGhQdf1n [excerpt: post continues on X]
